Frequently Asked Questions
How will I know if you are the right therapist for me?
The only way to know for sure is to come in for a session. Most people have a good sense of whether I am the right professional to help them within the first two sessions.
Do you provide in-person or online counseling?
I provide both in-person and online counseling. Sessions can also be held outside as walk and talk sessions if appropriate to your treatment needs.
What can I expect from therapy?
Once you have made a decision to see a therapist, you still might be apprehensive about the process. Many people feel nervous before their first appointment. I do not have answers to all your concerns, but I do have the ability to listen carefully and will ask thoughtful questions. Your answers to these questions will help shape the direction of our work. You can expect to be respected. You can expect that I will offer opinions and suggestions from time to time, but I will not make decisions for you.
What happens during the first session?
The initial session is the time for you to start to share your story, talk about your goals and what you would like to change. Another important aspect of the first session is deciding if we are a good fit. Do I seem like someone you can trust? You will identify some goals; I will begin to figure out how to help you achieve them.
How long do appointments last?
Appointments are typically around 50 minutes and will last no longer than 1 hour. This is the standard length of a counseling session.
How often will we meet?
To begin, I typically suggest that we meet once a week, but together we will decide what is appropriate for you. I find it’s important to gain some momentum in the beginning by meeting weekly or progress can stall out. Once some or all of your goals are met, meeting less often will make sense.
How much do you charge if I do not want to utilize insurance?
I charge $145 for the intake session and $130 for each session after.
What is your cancellation policy?
I want you to know that my cancellation policy is not a punishment and you will not be treated any different because of a cancellation. Having to cancel or reschedule your appointment from time to time during the duration of your treatment will most likely happen and because I know that life happens, I always waive the first broken appointment fee, no questions asked. I ask that you give me a 24 hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. If a 24 hour notice is not provided, late cancellations are subject to a $50 fee and a no show is subject to a $75 fee. This fee is not covered by insurances.
Do you prescribe medication?
No, I am not licensed to prescribe medication. I’d be happy to discuss with you questions regarding combining therapy with medication and will support you in finding a medical provider who can prescribe you medication if this would be a beneficial part of your journey. If you are already taking medication, I can coordinate care with your provider.
Are there any issues or types of clients that you do not work with?
I only work with adolescents ages 13 + and adults. I do not currently see couples. I do not conduct child custody evaluations nor do I provide custody recommendations. I also do not provide treatment for psychotic disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, etc), personality disorders or when the primary issue is substance abuse or eating disorders. Due to state licensing laws, I can only provide therapy and counseling to individuals residing in Virginia.
You mentioned you provided Christian Counseling. What if I don’t want you to incorporate faith and spirituality into our sessions?
To be a client at New Season Counseling, you do not need to be a part of particular denomination of the Christian faith or even be a Christian. I will respect your preference and would be honored to work with you no matter what your religious affiliation is or isn’t.
